Commenting on the launch of the BBC consultation into the way the licence fee is collected, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Oldham East & Saddleworth Elwyn Watkins said:

"I'm disappointed that this review will not investigate wider issues. As a condition of reviewing the licence fee we should demand that more programmes are made in the North and are about the North.

"The BBC employs far too many Southern luvvies when they could get better value for money in the North.

"We agree with renewing the licence fee system but we should demand more Northern programming. The Scots have been very effective in fighting for their share - we should do the same here and insist upon our own share as well.

"The BBC has missed a real opportunity to consult fully with viewers and shore up public support for what is, after all, publicly funded and public service broadcasting."
