Over 60,000 low paid Oldham area people don't qualify for fuel help

4.42.42pm GMT Wed 17th Sep 2008

Low-paid Oldham people are angry that they will receive no practical help from the government's scheme to stave off a fuel crisis this winter.

"I have been contacted by people who are fed up with the fact that they go to work for a relatively low wage and yet somebody who doesn't go to work gets it all for free", says Oldham East & Saddleworth Parliamentary Spokesperson Elwyn Watkins.

"This is a disincentive for people to get back into work. There will be people who will put off getting back into work until they have had this insulation and energy efficiency work done for free.

"At a time when all their bills are increasing, there are many people who will not be able to afford the thousand pounds or more that the government say they should spend.

"Liberal Democrat plans outlined today to cut taxes would do far more to help low and middle income families."
