Oldham East & Saddleworth Parliamentary Spokesperson Elwyn Watkins has added his voice to the thousands already backing the campaign to get Christie Hospital in Manchester its £6,500,000 back.

The petition, which now has over 5000 signatures, calls for the Financial Services Compensation (FSCS) to reverse its decision to refuse to refund Christie the money lost when Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander (KSF) bank collapsed in Iceland.

Elwyn Watkins said, "I am pleased to give this growing campaign my support. If there is enough public pressure, it is possible that Prime Minister Gordon Brown could intervene and give this hospital, which is one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe, its much needed money back. This issue is particularly resonant in Oldham, which was to be the site of a satellite radiotherapy centre to be paid for using some of this money.

"The Government can give money to bail out the banks, so why can they not give compensation to our world famous cancer hospital? The work done by The Christie has benefited many people across Oldham Borough, and I would encourage local people to give this campaign their backing."
